Harmanpreet and Deepti's centuries crush Zimbabwe by 121 runs, India take 2-0 series lead
The Indian women's cricket team defeated Zimbabwe by a massive 121-run margin in the second ODI, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Powered by brilliant centuries from captain Harmanpreet Kaur (126) and all-rounder Deepti Sharma (106 not out), along with a 153-run fifth-wicket partnership between the two, India posted a strong 328/6 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 207 in 48.5 overs.
Batting first after winning the toss, the hosts were given a near-ideal platform by young opener Pratika Rawal, who scored 61 off 67 balls. It was her second consecutive big score after a century in the previous ODI. India did lose a few wickets in the middle overs, but Harmanpreet and Deepti took charge and stitched together a partnership that completely changed the course of the match.
Harmanpreet struck 15 fours in her 121-ball innings, batting at a strike rate of nearly 104. It was her eighth ODI century. The captain provided both stability and aggression in the middle order. Deepti Sharma, meanwhile, smashed 106 not out off 86 balls, keeping the opposition bowlers under pressure. Her innings featured an outstanding strike rate of over 123—an exceptionally high figure for her role as an all-rounder. Deepti accelerated in the closing overs to take India past 300.
In bowling, young spinner Vaishnavi Sharma proved to be India's biggest success, taking four wickets for 39 runs to dismantle Zimbabwe's batting. It was the best bowling performance of the match by any bowler. Vaishnavi picked up wickets at regular intervals throughout her spell, maintaining constant pressure.
Chasing the target, Zimbabwe showed fight, but a mountain-like target of 329 was beyond them. Mupachikwa scored 49 and Mugeri-Tiripano 46 with useful contributions, but neither could convert their starts into big scores. This reflects Zimbabwe's batting limitations. In Zimbabwe's bowling attack, Nomvelo Sibanda (2/38) was the only effective bowler, while the rest could not deliver under adverse conditions. Zimbabwe did bat until the 49th over but could not avoid defeat.
Technically, this win is not as big an achievement for the Indian team as the scoreline suggests. As a strong Full Member side, India beating a weaker opponent by 121 runs was an expected outcome. Its real significance lies in the fact that this series is being used to give young players international experience. The emergence of new faces like Pratika Rawal and Vaishnavi Sharma is a long-term investment for Indian cricket. Pratika has strengthened her claim for an opening spot with a century and a half-century in consecutive matches, while Vaishnavi has proven her bowling capability.
The biggest challenge before the team management is the growing dependence on Harmanpreet Kaur. Harmanpreet, now in her mid-30s, scoring big consistently is both a relief for the team and a warning for the future. No permanent solution has yet emerged in the middle order as her replacement. Similarly, Deepti Sharma's unbeaten 106 was a brilliant innings, but assuming a permanent shift in her batting based on this would be premature. Long-term trends should not be drawn from a single match's performance.
In the near future, the Indian team will face stronger sides, and only then will be the real test of this middle order. Whether players like Harmanpreet and Deepti can repeat such performances against high-quality bowling will become clear only in upcoming series. Additionally, the weak batting and limited bowling resources of the Zimbabwe women's team reflect the wide gap in standards that exists in global women's cricket, which the ICC must address by increasing development investment.
Overall, this match is a reflection of the current shape of Indian women's cricket—a dominant performance by a veteran in home conditions and the emergence of young talent, the true assessment of which is still pending against a weaker opponent. This win secures India's lead in the series, but drawing firm conclusions for future challenges from it would be premature.
